It may be hard to envision this as a crocodile but the diversity of crocodiliforms was much higher in prehistoric times and clearly they filled a greater variety of niches. Simosuchus comes from the Mahajanga Province of Madagascar and was a contemporary of Majungasaurus crenatissimus. The small stature of Simosuchus indicates it may have been a choice prey item for some predators but a combination of its thick plate of osteoderms, a possible fossorial (underground) lifestyle, and perhaps a tenacious (wolverine-like) attitude might have helped this creature hold it’s own.
